Kickback risers are popular for the larger cruising style motorcycles.
Motorcycles come from the factory with stock handlebars and small riser mounts. These fit-all components can satisfy the comfort parameters of a vast amount of riders, and do have some minor adjustment capabilities. However, not all riders have the same body height and arm length. Kickback handlebar risers fill the need for extra handlebar extension lengths, providing an easier reach for the rider and offering a more relaxed riding position. Any motorcycle owner can install his own custom kickback handlebar risers.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Ratchet wrench
  • Allen sockets
  • Bath towel
  • Screwdrivers
  • Torque wrench

Instructions

    • 1
Set the motorcycle on its kickstand, or deploy the utility kickstand if it so equipped. If your motorcycle has a front windshield, use a standard socket to remove the four mounting bolts (two on each side) and pull off the windshield off. Use an Allen socket if your windshield has these bolt head configurations. Lay a bath towel over the gas tank to protect it from accidental tool drops and scratching.
    • 2
Loosen the bolts that hold the stock riser in place with a socket and wrench. The bolts are accessed from underneath the bottom of the triple tree, which holds the forks together. Remove the plastic plugs to the bolts on the stock riser caps and use an Allen socket to loosen the riser bolts. Allow the handlebars to swing down and rest on the cloth-covered gas tank.
    • 3
Loosen and remove the bolts on the stock clamps that hold the handlebars. Allow the bars to sit on the tank. Use an Allen socket to loosen and remove the old handlebar clamps from the triple tree. Take off the windshield bracket, secured by the stock riser bolts, and test-fit the new riser studs in the bracket.

Examine the amount of slack you have for the throttle cable and the brake line. Loosen both mounts at the adjustment fittings with a screwdriver, and pull enough cable and line up for the added extension. Re-tighten both mounting bracket adjustment fittings. Install the new risers, setting the windshield bracket back in place at the same time. Snug-tighten the bolts with a socket.
    • 5
Place the handlebars on the new risers and set the riser bar caps in place. Insert the Allen bolts into the caps and snug-tighten them with the Allen socket. Sit on the motorcycle and position the handlebars to your preference. Tighten the top cap bolts with a torque wrench to 10 foot pounds. Tighten the bottom riser bolts to 20 foot pounds with the torque wrench. Position the windshield back in place and insert the mounting bolts. Tighten the windshield mounting bolts with a socket, or with an Allen socket, if so equipped.
