These steps can be completed in less than four hours.
If you are mechanically inclined and want to boost your motorcycle's horsepower, there are many basic forms of maintenance that will increase your engine performance and get your motorcycle moving faster. Most of these procedures will also help increase your gas mileage as well. If you have the right tools, mastering these steps and performing them regularly can help to extend the life of your engine. You can save a significant expense at a shop and keep your motorcycle in top condition by doing the work yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Oil
  • Drain pan
  • Socket set
  • Spark plug socket
  • Exhaust manifold
  • Exhaust pipe
  • Air filter
  • New spark plugs
  • New spark plug wires

Instructions

    • 1
Set a drain pan underneath your oil drain bolt and twist the bolt counterclockwise with an adjustable wrench. Allow all of the oil to drain into the pan and twist the bolt clockwise to tighten it again. Locate your oil filler cap and dipstick to the right of your motor. Unscrew the cap and fill the tank with oil until it reaches the "Full" line on the dipstick. Start your engine and let it run for five minutes. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool for five minutes. Pull out the dipstick and read the oil level. If it does not read full anymore, add more oil to compensate as needed.

Remove the bolts that attach the exhaust manifold to the engine using the sockets. Pull the manifold away from the engine and position the replacement exhaust manifold down in the same spot. Bolt it down with the sockets to keep it secure.
    • 3
Unbolt the mounting bolts for the exhaust pipe connecting to the frame and the exhaust manifold. Slide the original pipe off and set the new exhaust pipe in its place. Replace the bolts in reverse order.

Remove the retainer screw in the center of the air filter cover on the right side of the motorcycle. Slide the cover off and pull out the old air filter. Press the new air filter down into the housing then replace the cover and secure it with the retainer screw.
    • 5
Change out the spark plugs and spark plug wires connected to your engine block, handling each one at a time separately. Pull the ends of the spark plug wire out of the spark plug and the ignition coil then unbolt the spark plug with the spark plug socket. Discard the plug and wire. Bolt the new plug down and attach the ends of the new wire into the plug and ignition coil. Replace all of the remaining plugs and wires in a similar fashion.
