Superbike racing is not as popular as MotoGP.
Superbikes are modified production sport bikes that are used for racing. Superbike leagues exist around the world. Ducati, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki are some of the dominant brands used in superbike racing. The cost of a superbike ranges, depending on how much money the racing team wants to invest. The cost can be several thousand to several hundred thousand, like those in FIM World Superbike. Most superbikes have four-stroke engines. For twins, the range is between 850 cc and 1200 cc. For four cylinders, it is between 750 cc and 1000 cc.

Things You'll Need

  • Suspension
  • Intake and Exhaust
  • Wheels and tires
  • Brakes
  • Swingarm
  • Full mechanics garage with tools
  • Small engine mods

Instructions

    • 1
Consult the regulations for the league that the superbike will be racing in. Restrictions on parts and modifications vary from league to league, so check before making any modifications.
    • 2
Replace the wheels and tires. Larger size, lightweight wheels are common in superbikes. The larger wheel equals a larger tire. The larger tire equals more grip. More grip equals better handling and less wheel spin. The tires should be slicks. Stock several compounds ranging from hard to soft. Track variation and weather conditions dictate tire choice.
    • 3
Change the suspension and swingarm. Racing suspensions adjust for different tracks. The suspension and swingarm changes ride height, stiffness and dramatically alters handling. Racing suspensions are typically much stiffer.
    • 4
Change the brakes. The brakes are essential to racing success. Being able to stop quickly and safely can shave seconds off corning time. Ceramic brakes are usually best, but different leagues may not allow them. Superbike brakes are typically much larger than stock ones.
    • 5
Upgrade the intake and exhaust system. Airflow is a big part of performance. Upgrade the airbox to a performance model. The airbox is what brings air into the engine. Upgrade the exhaust system. A complete exhaust system upgrade can add a lot of horsepower to any motorcycle.
    • 6
Upgrade smaller engine components. Fuel additives, spark plugs, belts, wires and ECM should all be upgraded for racing.
